This dataset contains results for module A1-A3 according to DIN EN 15804.
A comparison or evaluation of EPD data is only possible if all the datasets are created to be compared to EN 15804 and the product-specific features are considered.256The data set represents the Knauf specific situation, focusing on the main technologies and the legislative boundary conditions. In this Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) the rockwool DP-3 product of the company Knauf (Plant Skofja Loka, Slovenia) is described. Knauf Insulation manufactures rock mineral wool insulation. Typically rock mineral wool products comply with the requirements of the products standard /EN 13162/, and are produced in the form of slabs or boards, and also possibly rolls. The density range for rock mineral wool goes from 25 to 160 kg/m³. In terms of composition, inorganic rocks are the main components (typically 98%) of stone wool, with the remaining fraction organic content which is generally a thermosetting resin binder. The binder content is typically less than 4% and/or around 2%. The inorganic part is made of volcanic rocks, typically basalt, also dolomite and with an increasing proportion of recycled material in the form of briquettes, a mix of stone wool scrap and cement.
DP-3 is a multipurpose board which is used as a thermal, acoustical and fire insulation product.
The main raw materials are diabase (a rock that is similar to the volcanic rock basalt), dolomite and briquette. The briquette is made of rock mineral wool waste (internal or external) and cement. Additionally, coke is also added in the cupola as an energy carrier. Further down the manufacturing line, a binder (thermo set resin) is spread on the fibers which polymerization contributes to fix the products dimensions and mechanical properties.
The LCA results include the life cycle stages of the production of rockwools, mining, processing operations and input secondary materials (eg recycling processes), their transport to the factory and the production itself, including the provision of all supplies and materials, energy, and the complete waste treatment or landfilling of residual waste during the production stage. The modules A1, A2 and A3 are shown here as an aggregate module A1-A3. If these data were calculated for other modules, you will find them separately and a consideration of the entire life cycle can be merged.
The declaration refers to the functional unit of 1m³ of rockwool DP-3 product.
Background system:
Electricity: Electricity is modelled according to the individual country-specific situations. The country-specific modelling is achieved on multiple levels. Firstly, individual energy carrier specific power plants and plants for renewable energy sources are modelled according to the current national electricity grid mix. Modelling the electricity consumption mix includes transmission / distribution losses and the own use by energy producers (own consumption of power plants and "other" own consumption e.g. due to pumped storage hydro power etc.), as well as imported electricity. Secondly, the national emission and efficiency standards of the power plants are modelled as well as the share of electricity plants and combined heat and power plants (CHP). Thirdly, the country-specific energy carrier supply (share of imports and / or domestic supply) including the country-specific energy carrier properties (e.g. element and energy content) are accounted for. Fourthly, the exploration, mining/production, processing and transport processes of the energy carrier supply chains are modelled according to the specific situation of each electricity producing country. The different production and processing techniques (emissions and efficiencies) in the different energy producing countries are considered, e.g. different crude oil production technologies or different flaring rates at the oil platforms.
Thermal energy, process steam: The thermal energy and process steam supply is modelled according to the individual country-specific situation with regard to emission standards and considered energy carriers. The thermal energy and process steam are produced at heat plants. Efficiencies for thermal energy production are by definition 100% in relation to the corresponding energy carrier input. For process steam the efficiency ranges from 85%, 90% to 95%. The energy carriers used for the generation of thermal energy and process steam are modelled according to the specific import situation (see electricity above).
Transports: All relevant and known transport processes are included. Ocean-going and inland ship transport as well as rail, truck and pipeline transport of bulk commodities are considered.
Energy carriers: The energy carriers are modelled according to the specific supply situation (see electricity above).
Refinery products: Diesel fuel, gasoline, technical gases, fuel oils, lubricants and residues such as bitumen are modelled with a parameterised country-specific refinery model. The refinery model represents the current national standard in refining techniques (e.g. emission level, internal energy consumption, etc.) as well as the individual country-specific product output spectrum, which can be quite different from country to country. The supply of crude oil is modelled, again, according to the country-specific situation with the respective properties of the resources.Phenol formaldehyde resinAmmonia (NH3)Ammonium sulphate mix (by-product)Fatty acid from rape oil (by-product oleic acids) (data set not included in documentation) (data set not included in documentation) (data set not included in documentation)Tetrachlorosilane (silicon tetrachloride)Lubricant (aqueous emulsion of fatty substances)Cement (CEM I 52.5) (EN15804 A1-A3)Dolomite flour (2mm) (data set not included in documentation) (data set not included in documentation) (data set not included in documentation)Lubricants at refineryBauxiteBasalt production (washed)Coke mixThermal energy from LPGOxygen (gaseous)Oxygen (liquid)Polyethylene Film (PE-LD) without additivesWooden pallets (EURO, 40% moisture)Sodium chloride (rock salt)Tap waterMain applications for the DP-3 are: pitched roof, frame constructions, ceilings, walls and internal partition, following the building inspection approval of the DIBt: Allgemeine bauaufsichtliche Zulassung Z-23.15-1475.LCI resultAttributionalNoneNot applicableFOREGROUND system:
The data have been provided for the whole plant and by the cupola process unit also two other by-products (coke undersize and iron ore) are produced and sold. As the contribution of the co-products to the overall revenue represents less than 1% and it is considered as very low (EN 15804), the allocation can be neglected.
BACKGROUND system:
During the production of rock mineral wool, many different wastes occur. Most of them are either recycled directly in the plant for other production periods (stay as stock) or looped to other process units during the same production year. Also, some recycling materials from stock are used in the studied production period. Knauf reports different input and output flows (e.g. fine cokes) for these recycling flows in each unit process. However, from the LCA point of view, all flows describing secondary materials have no burdens according to /EN 15804/. They can be modelled as one unique flow for recycling materials or recycling goods.
No allocation of multi-input processes is considered in the background model.NoneIn the assessment, all data from the production data acquisition has been considered, i. e. all basic materials used as per formulation, utilized thermal energy, internal fuel consumption and electric power consumption, direct production waste, and all emission measurements available. All material and energy flows, except paper for labels in packaging, with a proportion of less than 1% have been considered in the background system.
The neglected flow (paper label for packaging) does not exceed 1% of the impact categories in any case. Machines and facilities required during production are neglected.NoneThe primary data have been collected from Knauf Insulation from the plant in Skofja Loka, in Slovenia. For the background data the GaBi 6 Database (GaBi 2012) developed by thinkstep AG, is used. The current mix used originates from data source in Slovenia.NoneTo model the life cycle of the production of DP-3 rockwool insulation boards, the data used have been collected from one year production (2011) of the products in the plant Skofja Loka, Slovenia.
For life cycle modelling of rock mineral wool products of Knauf Insulation, the GaBi 6 Software System for Life Cycle Engineering, developed by PE INTERNATIONAL AG, is used. All relevant background datasets are taken from the GaBi 6 software database and primary data are provided by Knauf Insulation. The last revision of the used data sets took place less than one year ago.NoneGaBi databasesIBU-Umweltproduktdeklaration Knauf Insulation: Steinwolle DP-3 (EPD-KIN-20130163-CBC1-EN), 2013100.02011NoneThis dataset contains results for the aggregated modules A1, A2 and A3 (A1-A3) according to DIN EN 15804.No statementCML2001 - Apr. 2013, Freshwater Aquatic Ecotoxicity Pot.
