The default settings (emissions and efficiencies) of the CHP model represent a combined heat and power (CHP) plant with a stationary diesel engine and a capacity below 50MW. The CHP plants are typically used within the oil & gas industry but also for other applications, e.g. base load or standby electricity/thermal energy supply. The emission factors for the plant have been taken from AP 42 (Chapter 3.4 Large stationary diesel and all stationary dual-fuel engines) with exception of the CO2 and dust emission factor. The CO2 emission factor for diesel/light heating oil is taken from IPCC (2006 IPCC Guidelines for National Greenhouse Gas Inventories - Volume 2 Energy - Introduction, Table 1.3). The dust emission factor is taken from the CA-Greet Model. The efficiency of the plant is related to gross production and net calorific value, i.e. the own consumption of electricity by the CHP is not considered. The default values for efficiency are based on data from ASUE (BHKW-Kenndaten 2011) and U.S. EPA (Technology Characterization - Gas Turbines 2008). It should be considered that the default efficiency values are related to full load, whereas part load can significantly reduce the overall efficiency of the system. Infrastructure of the CHP is not considered in the data set.

Combination with individual unit processes using this commodity enables the generation of user-specific (product) LCAs. Default values for emissions and efficiency are used which can be individually adjusted by the user. In case the user adjusts a specific emission to a value which is only possible with further flue gas treatment (e.g. low NOx values via selective catalytic reduction), it should be noted that necessary auxiliary material inputs (e.g. ammonia) are not considered by the data set. The sulphur dioxide emissions are calculated via the sulphur content of the diesel/light fuel oil. The used default sulphur content is 0.3%, in case of higher or lower sulphur contents the sulphur dioxide emissions will be automatically adjusted. A desulphurization of the flue gas is not considered. The data set has two outputs (electricity and thermal energy). The parameter "elec_therm" allows to use the data set also as an electricity plant (produces only electricity) or a heat plant (produces only thermal energy) but not to execute an allocation of impacts between the two products of a CHP.
