ac17ab1d-b313-4d4e-b50d-3457b97563eaTruck - dray (EPA SmartWay)Unit process, not pre-allocatedconsumption mixThe dataset name indicates vehicle typeDrayageTransport servicesRoadAssociated with port or rail head connections where freight is picked up and moved to another transfer facility or transport mode terminal.
Emissions data are from a combination of the US EPA's SmartWay program and the GREET model (which, in turn, uses the EPA MOVES model to calculate emission factors for various vehicle types). Truck production, truck disposal at end-of-life, and the fuel supply chain (i.e. fuel production, refinement, etc.) are not included in this dataset.12USVehicle for road transport.
Vehicle types are based on SmartWay categories. SmartWay collects fleet data -- including truck class, fuel consumption, miles driven, etc. -- from various US carriers and aggregates the data to generate average carbon dioxide (CO2), nitrogen oxide (NOx), and particulate matter (PM) emissions for each carrier. Emissions are provided in both in grams per mile and grams per ton-mile. Emissions for this dataset are then calculated by averaging emissions for all carriers classified under the given SmartWay category. A straight average is used as no obvious weighting factors (e.g. miles driven or freight hauled) are available.
Other emissions are calculated based on GREET data. An appropriate GREET truck type -- in this case, "Heavy heavy-duty vocational vehicles, diesel is baseline fuel" -- is identified and corresponding emission factors in grams per mile obtained from the GREET model. These emission factors are then divided estimated freight hauled, which is calculated by dividing SmartWay CO2 emissions in [grams per mile] by CO2 emissions in [grams per ton-mile] to arrive at an average number of tons.
Diesel consumption is calculated from SmartWay CO2 emissions. First, an estimate of biodiesel content in the US fuel supply was calculated based on data from the US Energy Information Administration (EIA) Annual Energy Review. In 2016, the EIA reported that 263e12 Btu biodiesel (Table 10.2b) and 6102e12 Btu distillate fuel oil (Table 3.8c) were consumed by the US transportation sector. This yields, roughly, 4% biodiesel by energy content. This number is used to weight CO2 emission factors per gallon of diesel, obtained from the SmartWay documentation. The emissions factor is then used to back-calculate diesel consumption from SmartWay CO2 emissions per ton-mile -- under the assumption that diesel is the primary fuel consumed by SmartWay carriers.
The fraction of biodiesel calculated from EIA data is also used to split SmartWay CO2 emissions between fossil CO2 and biogenic CO2.Transportation of goods by road.Unit process, single operationAttributionalNoneNoneFor details please see the document "GaBi Databases Modelling Principles"NoneGaBi Modelling PrinciplesThe dataset includes emissions available from SmartWay and GREET. Emissions factors for additional possible emission flows (such as benzene) were considered possible but not known, and thus were excluded.NoneData are from either the US EPA documentation or from the GaBi databases.NoneFor details please see the document "GaBi Databases Modelling Principles"NoneEPA - SmartWayTruck Carrier Partner Tool: Technical DocumentationEIA - Annual Energy Review GREET 201695.0The dataset is based on annual data collected by the EPA SmartWay program and the program's technical documentation. Production volume data is not available and therefore not taken into account for this inventory. No sampling or measurement was conducted.2016noneThe data set represents a transportation process specific to the vehicle type represented by the dataset. The appropriate truck or vehicle transport dataset should be chosen to best represent the transportation modeled.
The data set should be used for LCI/LCA studies where goods are transported via road in the United States. For processes corresponding to specific truck types, the distance traveled may be modified.
The data set does not include the fuel supply route. Therefore the fuel supply data set must be linked with this data set.No statementAnthropogenic Abiotic Depletion Potential (AADP), TU BerlinCML2001 - Jan. 2016, Abiotic Depletion (ADP elements)CML2001 - Jan. 2016, Abiotic Depletion (ADP fossil)CML2001 - Jan. 2016, Acidification Potential (AP)CML2001 - Jan. 2016, Eutrophication Potential (EP)CML2001 - Jan. 2016, Freshwater Aquatic Ecotoxicity Pot.
