The dataset covers the main production process to produce biobased polyvinylalcohol (PVA) starch blends in the US. But the model is not based on primary data. Therefore it does not refer to real market conditions. The dataset covers the cradle-to-gate system of Polyethylene terephthalate production. It includes secondary data on PVA-starch blend production and the overall quality is good. The dataset represents only a fictive route for the US production of PVA-starch blend. The present dataset should be applied only as a part of a product LCA. It is not suitable for specific technology comparisons. Hence the data set serves for comparing the potential of this virtual production route with the industrially used production process. In case of this process a proportion of 50 percent was modelled. No allocation was applied in the foreground system.340The data set reflects the production under US boundary conditions, focusing on the main technology. It includes all relevant process steps of the upstream chain.Foreground system: For starch blends thermoplastic starch is used as an input. Therefore starch and plastics - in this case polyvinylalcohol (PVA) - are combined by compounding the two reactants to receive the blended starch. During the pre-heating of the machines, waste is generated until the proper temperature is reached. In contrast to the PLA-starch blend, the received PVA-blend is not biodegradable. In relation to starch blends the proportion of starch differs from 30 to 70 percent. To give an example, a proportion of 50 percent was modelled.
The background system is addressed as follows: Electricity, Thermal energy: The electricity (and thermal energy as by-product) used is modelled according to the individual country-specific situation. The country-specific modelling is achieved on multiple levels. Firstly the individual power plants in service are modelled according to the current national grid. This includes net losses and imported electricity. Second, the national emission and efficiency standards of the power plants are modelled. Third, the country-specific fuel supply (share of resources used, by import and / or domestic supply) including the country-specific properties (e.g. element and energy contents) are accounted for. Fourth, the import, transport, mining and exploration processes for the energy carrier supply chain are modelled according to the specific situation of each power-producing country. The different mining and exploration techniques (emissions and efficiencies) in the different exploration countries are accounted for according to current engineering knowledge and information. Steam: The steam supply is modelled according to the individual country-specific situation with regard to the technology efficiencies and energy carriers used. Efficiencies range from 84% to 94% in relation to the representative energy carrier (gas, oil, coal). Coal, crude oil and natural gas used for the generation of steam are modelled according to the specific import situation (see electricity). Transports: All relevant and known transport processes used are included. Overseas transport including rail and truck transport to and from major ports for imported bulk resources are included. Furthermore all relevant and known pipeline and / or tanker transport of gases and oil imports are included. Energy carriers: Coal, crude oil, natural gas and uranium are modelled according to the specific import situation (see electricity). Refinery products: Diesel, gasoline, technical gases, fuel oils, basic oils and residues such as bitumen are modelled via a country-specific, refinery parameterized model. The refinery model represents the current national standard in refinery techniques (e.g. emission level, internal energy consumption,...) as well as the individual country-specific product output spectrum, which can be quite different from country to country. Hence the refinery products used show the individual country-specific use of resources. The supply of crude oil is modelled, again, according to the country-specific crude oil situation with the respective properties of the resources.Process steam from natural gas 95%Water deionizedElectricity grid mixThermoplastic starch polymer (TPS), unblendedPolyvinyl alcohol (from vinyl acetate) (PVAL)In general bioplastics are used in many fields like packaging, gastronomy, agriculture, automotive and consumer electronics. They are usually used to manufacture products which are intended for short time use like catering products, as well as in durable applications like interior components for cars. There are two advantages in relation to the use of bioplastics compared to fossil compounds. First, with biodegradability, they offer an add-on property and therefore additional means of recovery at the end of life. Secondly fossil resources can be saved by using these renewable materials. Hence their usage supports the reduction of fossil carbon dioxide. In case of biobased PVA blend only the latter advantage can be applied.Plastics_Starch_Polyvinylalcohol (PVA) Blend.JPGLCI resultAttributionalnoneAllocation - market valueAllocation - net calorific valueAllocation - exergetic contentAllocation - massFOREGROUND system: No allocation was applied.
BACKGROUND system: For the combined heat and power production, allocation by exergetic content is applied. For the electricity generation and by-products, allocation by market value is applied due to no common physical properties. Within the refinery allocation by net calorific value and mass is used. For the combined crude oil, natural gas and natural gas liquids production allocation by net calorific value is applied.

Mass – If a flow is less than 2 % of the cumulative mass of all the inputs and outputs of the LCI model, it may be excluded, provided its environmental relevance is not of concern.
Energy – If a flow is less than 2 % of the cumulative energy of all the inputs and outputs of the LCI model, it may be excluded, provided its environmental relevance is not of concern.
Environmental relevance – If a flow meets the above criteria for exclusion, yet is thought to potentially have a significant environmental impact, it will be included. All material flows which leave the system (emissions) and whose environmental impacts are higher than 1 % of the entire impact of an impact category that has been considered in the assessment, has been covered.
The sum of the neglected material flows does not exceed 5 % of mass, energy or envi-ronmental relevance. Cut-off criteria have been applied on unit processes and not on calculated inventories.noneThe data is based on literature and thinkstep know-how. The GaBi software system was used for generating the model of the production and as the source of background LCA information.noneNo data collection. Data is only based on literature. Hence for the modelling only secondary data was used. The datset is representative for the state of technology in 2012 and should be reviewed for technological change in 3 years.
