It complies with EN15804 and the Product Category Rule 'PCR 2012:01 Construction products and Construction services, Version 2.0, 2015-03-03'. The characterisation factors for unspecified NMVOC to air changed in the CML methodology since the EPDs were published, thus the POCP values in the EPD are higher compared to this process.
EN15804 Module C (the end-of-life stage) is best modelled at the building level. The GaBi datasets “Construction waste processing (EN15804 C3)” and “Ferro metals on landfill” were used for modules C3 and C4 respectively in the OneSteel EPDs, assuming a steel recycling rate of 89% (Hyder Consulting, Waste and Recycling in Australia 2011).
The data set covers all relevant process steps / technologies over the supply chain of the represented cradle to gate inventory with a good overall data quality. The inventory is mainly based on industry data and is completed, where necessary, by secondary data. This data set is based on primary data from internationally adopted production processes, connected with regional precursor chains.547The data set represent the steel production by OneSteel in Australia. Primary data for energy, water and material inputs and outputs have been provided by OneSteel for its operations in Australia. As secondary data, Australian data were used where possible. Where regional data were unavailable, available data from a the most suitable alternative regions were used.Life cycle stages A1-3 include the raw material supply, its transport and the manufacturing of the product. The dataset represents a cradle-to-gate assessment.
Foreground system:
The product is sourced from a mix of blast furnace/basic oxygen steelmaking and electric arc furnaces. For blast furnace/basic oxygen steelmaking iron ore, dolomite and quartz used in the steel production process are mined in South Australian mines. The materials mined are used together with coking coal, limestone, alloys and steel scrap to produce molten iron in a blast furnace process, which is then transformed into liquid steel and casted into steel billets, slabs and blooms for further processing. An electric arc furnace is used to melt steel scrap and produce liquid steel. The liquid steel is then blended with alloys in a ladle metallurgy furnace and formed into steel billets for further processing. In a rolling mill the intermediate products are processed further to produce the end product. The product is produced in different grades and with different alloys, as this has no material impact on the impacts, all are represented by this data set. The product is available at the mill for the customer.
Background system:
Electricity: Electricity is modelled according to the individual country-specific situations. The country-specific modelling is achieved on multiple levels. Firstly, individual energy carrier specific power plants and plants for renewable energy sources are modelled according to the current national electricity grid mix. Modelling the electricity consumption mix includes transmission / distribution losses and the own use by energy producers (own consumption of power plants and "other" own consumption e.g. due to pumped storage hydro power etc.), as well as imported electricity. Secondly, the national emission and efficiency standards of the power plants are modelled as well as the share of electricity plants and combined heat and power plants (CHP). Thirdly, the country-specific energy carrier supply (share of imports and / or domestic supply) including the country-specific energy carrier properties (e.g. element and energy content) are accounted for. Fourthly, the exploration, mining/production, processing and transport processes of the energy carrier supply chains are modelled according to the specific situation of each electricity producing country. The different production and processing techniques (emissions and efficiencies) in the different energy producing countries are considered, e.g. different crude oil production technologies or different flaring rates at the oil platforms.
Thermal energy, process steam: The thermal energy and process steam supply is modelled according to the individual country-specific situation with regard to emission standards and considered energy carriers. The thermal energy and process steam are produced at heat plants. Efficiencies for thermal energy production are by definition 100% in relation to the corresponding energy carrier input. For process steam the efficiency ranges from 85%, 90% to 95%. The energy carriers used for the generation of thermal energy and process steam are modelled according to the specific import situation (see electricity above).
Transports: All relevant and known transport processes are included. Ocean-going and inland ship transport as well as rail, truck and pipeline transport of bulk commodities are considered.
Energy carriers: The energy carriers are modelled according to the specific supply situation (see electricity above).
Refinery products: Diesel fuel, gasoline, technical gases, fuel oils, lubricants and residues such as bitumen are modelled with a parameterised country-specific refinery model. The refinery model represents the current national standard in refining techniques (e.g. emission level, internal energy consumption, etc.) as well as the individual country-specific product output spectrum, which can be quite different from country to country. The supply of crude oil is modelled, again, according to the country-specific situation with the respective properties of the resources.Thermal energy from natural gasThermal energy from hard coalInert matter (Unspecific construction waste) on landfillDiesel mix at refineryHeavy fuel oil at refinery (1.0 wt.% S)Rail transport cargo - average, average train, gross tonne weight 1000t / 726t payload capacityContainer ship, 27500 dwt payload capacity, ocean goingAverage ship, 1500t payload capacity/ canalTruck-trailer, Euro 0 - 6 mix, 34 - 40t gross weight / 27t payload capacityElectricity grid mixElectricity from coal gasesElectricity from biogasElectricity from photovoltaicElectricity from biomass (solid)Electricity from wind powerElectricity from hydro powerLubricants at refineryElectricity from heavy fuel oil (HFO)Electricity from natural gasElectricity from hard coalElectricity from ligniteTap waterFerro metals on landfillReinforcing bar is a hot rolled deformed bar of normal ductility grade 500 steel that meets AS/NZS 4671:2001 Steel Reinforcing Materials. It is produced in both straight lengths and coils in sizes from 10mm to 40mm diameter.
Under the United Nations Central Product Classification (UN CPC) system of classification this product can fall into the categories: 41241 - Bars and rods, hot rolled, in irregularly wound coils, of iron and non-alloy steel or 41242 - Other bars and rods of iron or non-alloy steel, not further worked than forged, hot rolled, hot drawn or extruded, but including those twisted after rolling.EPD_OneSteel 855.jpgPartly terminated systemAttributionalNoneAllocation - market valueAllocation - net calorific valueAllocation - exergetic contentAllocation - massNot applicableForeground system: Where required, co-product allocation using the most relevant physical quantity (mass, volume or energy) was applied for core processes. Where differences in the price of the co-products was large (>25% according to
EN 15804, section 6.4.3.2), economic allocation was applied using annual average prices for the time period July 2013 to June 2014. Recycling allocation follows the polluter pays principle in line with EN 15804 and the PCR.
Background system: For the combined heat and power production, allocation by exergetic content is applied. For the electricity generation and by-products, e.g. gypsum, allocation by market value is applied due to no common physical properties. Within the refinery allocation by net calorific value and mass is used. For the combined crude oil, natural gas and natural gas liquids production allocation by net calorific value is applied.
